◆김중일> 안녕하십니까, 광주대 문예창작과 김중일 학과장입니다.
◇선은애> 광주대 문예창작과가 오랜 역사와 함께 최근 좋은 성과를 내면서 주목받고 있습니다. 소개 부탁드립니다.
◆김중일> 광주대학교 문예창작과는 1992년 개설되어 이미 30년이 넘은 학과입니다. 전국의 문예창작과의 다수가 2000년대 전후로 개설된 점을 감안하면 오랜 역사를 자랑하고 있습니다. 시, 소설, 아동문학, 비평 등 전통적 문예창작 교육을 기반으로 영상문학과 미디어콘텐츠 및 최근 부상하고 있는 장르문학과 웹소설 등 다양한 분야를 포괄하는 교육 과정을 운영하고 있습니다. 학과개설 이래 250여 명의 작가와 문학상 수상자를 배출했습니다. 2017년에는 재학생이 경향신문 신춘문예 소설 부문에서 당선되기도 했고 3명의 대산대학문학상 수상자를 배출하기도 했습니다. 다수의 동문들이 학계, 방송, 출판, 연극 등 다양한 문화예술 관련 산업 현장에 진출했으며, 최근에는 졸업생 및 재학생들이 웹소설 작가로 활약하고 있습니다.
◇선은애> 신춘문예 등 여러 공모전과 다양한 장르문학에서 광주대 출신들이 등단하고 작품을 발표하고 있는데요, 학과 특성상 교수님들의 지도가 중요해보입니다. 어떤 활동을 하셨는지 광주대 문창과 교수님들 소개도 부탁드립니다.
◆김중일> 학과 교수님은 다섯 분이십니다. 모두 현재 중견 작가시기도 하고요. 저는 시 창작을 맡고 있습니다. 그리고 소설 창작에 이기호 교수님, 비평에 조형래 교수님, 아동청소년문학에 안점옥 교수님, 장르문학-웹소설 창작에 박도형 교수님이 계십니다. 특히 박도형 교수님은 30대 중반이시고요. 아마도 전국에 산재한 문예창작학과 중 우리 학과에 재직하고 계신 교수님들이 현재 가장 젊지 않을까 싶습니다. 그만큼 재학생들과 소통하고 작품을 지도하는 데 있어서 적극적이십니다.
◇선은애> 광주대 문창과는 요즘 인기인 웹소설 분야에서 특히 두각을 드러내고 있는데요, 웹소설을 포함해 그동안 어떤 성과가 있었는지 궁금합니다.

◆김중일> 기본적으로 교과 과정 뿐만 아니라 웹소설 관련 비교과 심화교육과정을 개설하고, 그에 따라 학생들이 자유롭게 창작활동을 할 수 있는 소모임을 만들어서 지원하고 있습니다. 2022년에는 '웹소설 입문'이라는 웹소설 교육이론서를 조형래, 박도형 교수님이 함께 출간하시기도 했습니다. 좀 더 구체적으로 이야기하자면, 저희가 웹소설‧장르문학 분야를 특성화하기 시작한 것은 2015년부터였습니다. 2017년 1학기부터 장르문학 창작 관련 수업을 교육과정에 정식으로 포함하는 등 학과 차원의 특성화 및 지원을 본격화했습니다. 때마침 졸업생 몇몇이 웹소설 플랫폼 연재로 수만의 독자를 확보하거나 웹소설‧장르문학 관련 콘텐츠 기업에 편집자‧PD로 취업하는 등 가시적인 성과가 나타났습니다. 대표적으로 앞서 언급한 필명 황제펭귄이나 박도형 교수가 이 당시의 졸업생입니다. 2018년부터 웹소설‧장르문학 창작을 희망하는 학생들이 본격적으로 입학하기 시작하면서 관련 수업을 확충하고 소모임 학생들을 중심으로 워크숍 프로그램을 운영하는 등 지원을 활성화했습니다.
2020년 들어 웹소설 플랫폼 <문피아>나 콘텐츠 전문기업 <키다리 스튜디오> 등과 산학협력 업무협약을 맺고 공동 프로그램을 운영하는 등의 시도가 있었습니다. 2021년 웹소설‧장르 문학 관련 수업을 전담할 교원을 초빙하는 한편으로 기존 장르문학 창작 소모임을 <웹소설 창작공방>으로 확대 개편하면서 교수‧강사 주도의 온·오프라인 창작 프로그램을 상설화하고 창작 전용 공간을 마련했습니다. 웹소설 작가로 활동하거나 관련 기업에서 일하고 있는 졸업생들을 초청하여 온라인 특강을 마련하고 공동 프로그램을 운영하는 등 문창과 자체의 인적 네트워크를 구축 활성화하는 데도 주의를 기울였습니다.

◆김중일> 말씀하신 것처럼 실기가 중요합니다. 다만, 창작 과정을 진행하기 위해선 교양 및 이론 수업도 필수입니다. 우선 1, 2학년 과정에도 실기수업이 있습니다만 기본적으로 바른 문장을 쓸 수 있는 문장기초 수업이나 관련 이론에 초점을 맞춰 진행이 됩니다. 시, 소설, 동화, 비평, 웹소설 등 모든 분야의 창작에 필요한 기본 소양을 가르칩니다. 이 과정에는 비평이론이나 문학사가 다뤄지기도 하고, 웹소설 시장의 변천사와 같은 시장의 흐름에 대한 이해도 진행됩니다. 그와 별개로 문장이나 묘사, 비유 등 창작에 필요한 기본기에 대한 수업도 이뤄지죠. 이러한 이론 수업이 1, 2학년 때 진행되고 난후 3, 4학년 수업은 거의 실기에 초점이 맞춰진다 보시면 됩니다. 웹소설을 포함한 모든 장르의 실기 수업 및 비교과 프로그램을 통해 교수님들의 피드백을 받게 됩니다.

◆김중일> 여러 가지가 있습니다만 대표적인 건 역시 각 장르별 학생들의 자율적인 소모임 활동입니다. 자율적으로 모여서 활동하지만 장르별로 지도교수가 배정되어 있어서 작품에 대한 피드백이 이루어집니다. 현재 소설 창작 모임인 '소바라기', 시 창작 '어깨동무', 동화창작 '운동장', 인문학 '북적북적', 웹소설 창작 '창작공방'이 운영되고 있습니다. 학과에서 창작 지원을 위해 운영하는 거의 모든 비교과 프로그램이 이 창작 소모임을 통해 진행된다고 보시면 됩니다. 아울러 보통의 문예창작과에서 전통적으로 운영하고 있는 문학제, 문학답사, 작가초정특강, 시화전, 문집 제작 등도 진행되며, 졸업생들 중 희망자의 경우 전자책으로 작품집을 발간해주는 프로그램, 재학생이 창작물을 발표할 수 있는 학과 문예 웹진도 꾸준히 발간하고 있습니다.

◆김중일> 문창과 하면 '작가'가 먼저 떠오르기 마련입니다. 신춘문예나 문예지를 통해 등단하여 소설가, 시인, 동화작가 등 문학작품을 쓰는 예술가로서 활동할 수도 있으며, 앞서 많이 말씀드렸듯 웹소설 플랫폼 연재를 통해 웹소설 작가로도 활동할 수 있습니다. 작가 이외에도 진출할 수 있는 분야는 더 다양합니다. 출판사 편집자 및 기획자, 광고회사 기획 담당, 언론사 기자, 방송국 작가, 시나리오 작가, 작사가, 스토리텔러 등 문학적 소양과 감각 그리고 이야기를 필요로 하는 모든 직종으로 진출할 수 있다고 생각하시면 좋겠습니다.

◆김중일> 앞서 우리 학과가 특히 웹소설 분야에서 전국의 4년제 문예창작과 중에 가장 선제적으로 구축한 교육프로그램에 대해서 설명을 드렸습니다. 동시에 전통적인 순문학, 인문학적 교육에 대한 철학도 철저히 가져가고 있습니다. 콘텐츠의 깊이와 확장성도 결국 인문학적 소양으로부터 나온다고 생각하고 있습니다. 시, 소설 등 순문학 지망생들에 대한 여러 지원도 시간관계상 다 말씀드리지 못하지만 마련되어 있습니다. 가시적으로는 '순문학에서 장르문학'까지 다양한 글쓰기 장르를 접할 수 있는 이런 균형 잡힌 교육시스템이 우리 학과만의 경쟁력일 것입니다. 덧붙이자면, 근본적으로 그것이 가능했던 이유가 현재 교수님들 모두가 학생들이 원하고, 학생들에게 도움이 된다면 무조건이라고 할 만큼 적극적이고 추진력 있게 갖고 있는 역량을 펼치신다는 것입니다. 웹소설 관련하여 기존에 구축한 교육 시스템에 머물지 않고 현재도 대형 플랫폼 기업과 업무협약을 맺고 여러 교육프로그램을 기획을 하고 또 추진하고 있는 중입니다.
